Ingredients:

1 cup masoor dal (red lentils)
2 cups water
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon garam masala powder
2 tablespoons vegetable oil or ghee (clarified butter)
1 onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 green chili pepper, finely chopped
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup cooked basmati rice

Cooking Instructions:

Rinse the masoor dal in a sieve until the water runs clear. Transfer to a medium saucepan and add the water. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 25-30 minutes until the dal is tender and cooked through. Set aside.
Heat oil or ghee in a large skillet over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Add onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add garlic, green chili pepper, turmeric powder and garam masala powder and cook for another minute until fragrant.
Add cooked dal to the skillet along with salt and stir to combine everything together. Simmer for 5-10 minutes until heated through and flavors have blended together nicely. Serve hot with cooked basmati rice on the side. Enjoy!
