Ingredients:

½ cup masoor dal (red lentils)
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
2 tablespoons oil or ghee
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 small onion, diced
1 green chili pepper, diced
2 tomatoes, diced
½ teaspoon turmeric powder
Salt to taste

Cooking Instructions:

Begin by rinsing the masoor dal in a bowl of cold water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.
Heat the oil or ghee in a large pot over medium heat. Add the cumin and mustard seeds and cook until they begin to sizzle and pop.
Add the garlic and onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the green chili pepper and cook for another minute.
Add the tomatoes and cook until softened, about 5 minutes more. Stir in the turmeric powder and salt to taste.
Add the masoor dal to the pot along with 3 cups of water and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20-25 minutes or until dal is tender but not mushy. Stir occasionally while cooking so that it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pot.
Serve hot with steamed rice or chapati/roti/naan breads! Enjoy!
