Ingredients:

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
1/2 teaspoon garam masala powder
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/4 teaspoon red chili powder (optional)
1/2 cup diced onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons tomato paste or puree
1/2 cup heavy cream or coconut milk (optional)
3 ounces cooked chicken, shredded or cubed
2 tablespoons butter
Salt to taste
Chopped fresh cilantro for garnish For the Naan:
1 cup all
purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
Pinch of salt
2 tablespoons plain yogurt or milk
2 tablespoons melted butter or olive oil
Water as needed

Cooking Instructions:

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add the garam masala, turmeric and red chili powder (if using) and stir to combine.
Add the onion and garlic and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the tomato paste or puree and cook for another minute.
Add the cream or coconut milk (if using), chicken and butter to the skillet and stir to combine. Simmer until heated through and sauce is thickened, about 10 minutes. Season with salt to taste.
Meanwhile, make the naan by combining the flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Stir in the yogurt or milk and melted butter or olive oil until combined. Slowly add water as needed until a soft dough forms that is not too sticky but still holds together when shaped into a ball. Knead for 5 minutes then let rest for 10 minutes before shaping into balls about 4 inches in diameter on a lightly floured surface.
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat then add one of the naan balls at a time to cook until lightly browned on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side depending on thickness of dough ball used. Keep warm while cooking remaining naans then serve with butter chicken as desired along with chopped fresh cilantro for garnish if desired.
